A Thought for Today · Day 192 of 365 · Overthinking

Some clarity arrives after the adrenaline leaves.

A little space can make the difference between reflection and repetition.

The short version

The useful distinction is between a question that still needs information and a question your mind keeps reopening for reassurance.

Why this matters

The mind is good at generating additional possibilities. It is less good at telling you when those possibilities have stopped being useful.

A calmer response usually begins when you separate what is known from what is being imagined.

You may notice this when
  • You are searching for one exception that will overturn a pattern.
  • You feel more activated after thinking than you did before.
  • You are trying to predict every possible reaction before taking one small step.

You do not have to solve every possibility before responding to reality.

Try this in real life

One small move

Ask whether another ten minutes of thinking is likely to change the decision. If not, use the ten minutes for something that brings you back to the present.

A question worth sitting with

What do I already know that I keep asking myself to prove again?

You do not need to answer it immediately. Let the question stay open long enough to notice what feels different when the first reaction settles.

Take this with you

You are allowed to stop thinking before the uncertainty disappears.
