A Thought for Today · Day 204 of 365 · Overthinking

Not every thought that returns deserves to stay.

A quiet scene for the point where thinking stops adding information.

The short version

Sometimes the mind keeps working because the emotional answer is harder to accept than the logical one.

Why this matters

The mind is good at generating additional possibilities. It is less good at telling you when those possibilities have stopped being useful.

The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty. It is to stop giving uncertainty unlimited authority over your time.

You may notice this when
  • You already know what you would advise someone else to do.
  • You keep revisiting the same conversation without learning anything new.
  • The question changes wording, but the underlying fear stays the same.

You do not have to solve every possibility before responding to reality.

Try this in real life

One small move

Ask whether another ten minutes of thinking is likely to change the decision. If not, use the ten minutes for something that brings you back to the present.

A question worth sitting with

Which part of this is fact, and which part is a prediction I keep rehearsing?

You do not need to answer it immediately. Let the question stay open long enough to notice what feels different when the first reaction settles.

Take this with you

Not every unanswered possibility deserves equal weight.
